Honoring Martyred Palestinian Journalists

Israel’s genocide in Gaza has been the deadliest conflict for journalists in living memory. Over the past 20 months, Palestinian journalists have fearlessly reported on the Zionist campaign to exterminate their people, unmasking the brutal realities of Israeli air strikes, ground raids, and forced starvation and documenting Palestinians’ daily survival. To destroy the evidence of its war crimes and permanently silence the witnesses, Israel deploys the full might of its surveillance and military technology to systematically assassinate Palestinian journalists. Just four days ago, Hassan Majdi Abu Warda, the director of Barq Gaza News Agency, was killed along with several members of his family after Israeli forces bombed their home.

“If you're reading this, it means I have been killed — most likely targeted – by the Israeli occupation forces,” wrote Hossam Shabat, a Palestinian journalist for Al-Jazeera Mubasher. Shabat wrote these words believing that he, like so many other journalists, would soon be murdered by the state of Israel. In March, the IOF targeted and killed Shabat in a drone strike on his car. He was 23 years old. His final message to the world continues:

“By God, I fulfilled my duty as a journalist. I risked everything to report the truth, and now, I am finally at rest — something I haven’t known in the past 18 months. I did all this because I believe in the Palestinian cause. I believe this land is ours, and it has been the highest honor of my life to die defending it and serving its people.”

It should not take the messages of martyrs from beyond the grave for the world to wake up to Israel’s campaign to obliterate Palestinian life, culture, and systems of knowledge. And yet in the United States and at Harvard, we are surrounded by media, from the New York Times to the Crimson, that refuse to recognize the unfolding apocalypse. Western media condemns the “horrific violence” of the “terrorist attack” of Oct. 7 with every other breath. All the while, these outlets hide Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in the footnotes: hedging death counts by implying that the numbers come from “Hamas-run” sources, and breezing past the IOF’s bombings of hospitals and displacement camps as though they are weather reports.

This is not what journalism is meant to be. The dedication and work of every Palestinian journalist in Gaza shows us as much. But our commitment to Palestinian liberation, to truth-telling, to the fate of our world, stretches much further. This is a commitment that we hold and pursue in our work, however minor its impact, as the Crimeson. It is our duty to denounce Israel’s genocide at every turn, and to protest our universities and governments until they divest from Palestinian death and reinvest in Palestinian life. We must follow Shabat’s final command to us:

“I ask you now: do not stop speaking about Gaza. Do not let the world look away. Keep fighting, keep telling our stories — until Palestine is free.”

The Crimeson pays its respects to the following journalists who have been martyred in Gaza in the past 20 months, and honors those still serving their people. Israel’s genocide has killed over 230 Palestinian journalists, so the list below is an incomplete one. This, of course, is by design: The IOF murders journalists daily, whether in targeted attacks or the bombardment of civilian infrastructure; and thousands of Palestinians are missing, their bodies trapped underneath the rubble of entire cities. In the face of this devastation, Palestinian journalists keep fighting to tell their stories, to document their people’s love of life, to honor the land and its people as more than their deaths. We commit ourselves to this pursuit of truth, to the rigorous defense of life, to complete Palestinian liberation from the river to the sea.
